"The performance of Userful MultiSeat Linux is very stable compared to Microsoft MultiPoint. To deploy the same amount of stations that we did with Userful, it would require more and better hardware to do the same at the same speed."

The Valle Real Americano School
Highest quality learning at a low cost
With just 1 host PC, fourteen new computer workstations provide students with high quality learning at a low cost to the school
The Valle Real Americano School is a private school in Guadalajara, Mexico that opened in 2009. It teaches through a constructive educational model. They empower their students to learn on their own by doing, researching, asking, and taking ownership of the knowledge delivered in each class. Under this teaching philosophy, the teacher is not only a learning coach, but also a researcher of knowledge. The School started 3 years ago with 13 students, and recently the school decided that it was time to add a digital classroom into the learning options available to the students.

"First we tried some terminals working with Wyse Thin Clients, and the performance was good enough for administrative applications, but it was rather disappointing for the multimedia applications used to teach the lessons," said Carlos Eduardo Blake Betancourt, Technical Advisor and Supervisor of the Digital Lab at The Valle Real Americano School. "Then we bought some HP t100 Thin Clients that worked way better, but using Windows was just too expensive because of the need to buy licenses for everything. So we started looking for an open source option."
When looking for open source alternatives, Carlos found a video of Userful MultiSeat software running on HP t100 Thin Clients on the Internet and shared the video with his colleagues. "We were very interested in the features showcased in the video, where 1 computer was multiplied by 10, and the teacher was able to control the content and supervise the work of every user on all the terminals," said Carlos Eduardo Blake. "I immediately sent Userful an online request for trial licenses, and with their answer I learned that there was a Userful Technological Partner in the same city where we were located: Technotrend." Technotrend installed the trial Userful licenses at the Valle Real Americano School, and helped to support the school during the free trial. The trial was setup using some of the schools existing equipment and using new hardware provided by Technotrend. "They were very helpful and even lent us some equipment to evaluate the solution and witness its performance," said Carlos Eduardo Blake.
The trial was so positive that the school decided to switch its computers permanently to the Userful MultiSeat solution, and deployed a digital lab with 14 independent HP t100 Thin Client terminals connected to a single host PC. "The performance of Userful MultiSeat Linux is very stable compared to Microsoft MultiPoint. To deploy the same amount of stations that we did with Userful, it would require more and better hardware to do the same at the same speed," said Sergio Ivan Castellanos, Special Projects Engineer and Product Engineer at Technotrend.
The students have adapted very easily to work with Linux, and the school is very happy with the solution. "The economic advantages, electricity savings, cabling flexibility and open source apps are a great advantage, but It is also great not having to worry about licenses' audits and virus problems," said Carlos Blake. "We don't support software piracy and we teach the kids about its illegal implications, so with Userful MultiSeat Linux we can walk the talk." The teachers are also happy with the solution, and can´t wait to start using the computers more and more in their lessons. "It is wonderful that each kid can use his or her individual computing station, do their own work and take ownership of their own computer-based learning experience, of course, under our supervision," said Cecilia Maciel Medina, Computing and English Teacher at the Valle Real Americano School.
Userful MultiSeat not only saves money, it also helps the environment by reducing electricity use and e-waste. As compared to a traditional PC-per-seat solution, over 3 years, the Valle Real Americano School will save:
Userful MultiSeat's ability to turn one computer into many saves money by greatly reducing hardware, electricity and support costs
lowering total cost of ownership
Saved 38,236 KWh of electricity
enough to power
21 homes for a year
30 tons of CO₂ was saved
equal to planting 7 acres of trees or taking 5 cars off of the road for one year
Userful MultiSeat software creates multiple high performance desktop stations, and other digital displays, from a central computer.
The economic advantages, electricity savings, cabling flexibility and open source apps are a great advantage, but it is also great not having to worry about licenses' audits and virus problems."
