First MultiSeat Digital Lab of the La Salle Educational Institutions in Ecuador
La Salle Schools are global Christian educational institutions that are represented through 889 schools across 82 countries, and provide education to 858,669 students with a staff of 83,089 teachers, managers, and general personnel.
Among the twenty-one subdivisions of La Salle School in Ecuador, the "Latacunga" branch is located one hour south from Quito, and educates one thousand girls and boys daily, from kindergarten up to ninth grade.

Three years ago, the principal of all the La Salle School branches was mandated to install an Ubuntu-based operating system on every digital lab of the school around the country, after one of the schools received a Windows audit and failed. "Initially the teachers and students were hesitant to adopt the new operating system. But our educators for the digital labs have been able to teach and guide everyone through the Linux systems and its applications, and now everyone manages the computers without any problem," said Jimena Ocaña, primary teacher and network administrator at La Salle Latacunga School.
This meant that the students and teachers at La Salle Latacunga School were already working on Linux. The digital lab, however, was outdated and needed new equipment since some of the hardware was either missing or malfunctioning.
Infolink, a Userful partner that sells Hewlett-Packard's multiseat hardware with Userful's MultiSeat Linux software in Quito, Ecuador, is a company that commercializes computing and communication products with a bold focus on the education sector. A key element of their commercial offering is that clients can submit on-line quote requests in order to have a more agile and systematized process. One of the on-line requests came from La Salle School in Ecuador.
The La Salle School was inquiring about equipment for a basic digital classroom built with individual computers for each user without knowing that there was a multiseat alternative. "When we showed the MultiSeat solution, they immediately realized that it was a completely lower investment with the possibility to have a higher amount of workstations," said Marco Alvarez, Infolink's General Manager. Twenty-three stations running on three HP servers were installed using HP's multiseat devices. Besides the low cost and substantial ongoing savings, the school liked the fact that the noise and the heat would be significantly reduced on a MultiSeat system, compared to a PC-per-user solution. "It's noticeable that the heat and the noise are less than before. Plus, compared to digital classrooms from other branches where the use of fans and air conditioning is needed, the students can focus more easily when working in a cool and quiet environment," said Fernando Cepeda, computing teacher at La Salle Latacunga School.
The students love the educational games, the Internet applications, and all the tools that the HP hardware and Userful MultiSeat computing stations put in their hands. "The MultiSeat system has been very beneficial for the students because they now have an independent station to work on, and the applications they use to learn are very intuitive. It also helps that the teachers can guide and supervise their work all the time thanks to the monitoring and control tools," said Fernando Cepeda, computing teacher at La Salle Latacunga School.
According to Jimena Ocaña, the HP and Userful combined solution has also allowed the students to be more comfortable at their stations. Now they have more space to place their notebooks and take notes if necessary because the USB devices do not require much space. The electricity savings are also a great advantage for the school, not only because the system consumes less energy, but because when the servers are shut down, the stations can do this automatically.
"Before, I had to do too much maintenance on each CPU individually. Today I feel less stressed because I don't have to worry about virus cleaning, CPU formatting, changing burnt power supplies, or even finding software updates. Plus, if I have to install new software, I just do it once from the host PC and it updates all the stations automatically," said Jimena Ocaña, primary teacher and network administrator at La Salle Latacunga School.
