Enabling ten users to work from a single PC, 1-Box is the world's quickest, easiest, and most cost effective way to deploy computers onsite. It is perfect for registration, voting, demos,
training, and other onsite events. The remainder of this section elaborates the main features of 1-Box Onsite.
1.1 Portability and Set-up
- All ten stations and the 1-Box can easily be transported in a small car.
- No technical personnel are needed. All the software is either pre loaded by Userful; can be saved from the web with the “snapshot” feature; or can be accessed via
an onsite network connection. Simply plug the stations into the 1-Box and connect the 1-Box to the power and optionally the Internet and printers.
- Connecting 1-Box Onsite to the Internet is easy. 1-Box Onsite auto-detects the network, then makes sure you can get through to the Internet.
- Compare this to the headaches of transporting, setting up, and testing a traditional network.
- Eliminates costly and disruptive virus outages. The system is immune to Windows Outlook and Office viruses.
- Tamperproof: The robust firewall and system security blocks Intruders, Worms and Trojans.
- The redundant hard disk ensures that even a rare event like a hard disk failure won't interrupt your operations.
- Protects user privacy: Clicking the Exit button automatically clears all personal information and station modifications, including browser history, personal files, cookies, etc
- Toll-Free support, and next-day onsite couriered replacements.
- Reliable 24/7-operation.
Use it for onsite registration, Badge printing, Internet café (note, Userful's 1-Box Café product provides for a more
comprehensive Internet café solution), training, website demonstrations and many other used.
- Integrated Registration and Badge Printing System “the world's simplest onsite registration system”
- Manage all browsers at once from a single administration interface.
- Pre-store settings for upcoming events allowing onsite staff to fulfill multiple engagements and focus on the task rather than walking through software setup with tech support on
the phone.
- Showcase websites without an Internet connection onsite. An entire site can be pre-stored to the hard-drive with a single click.
- Robust cleanup ensures a consistent “clean slate” for all users “no-rebooting” required. “Smart Security” prevents system changes and unwanted software installs.
- Multi-lingual: Choose the preferred language for the web-browsers
- Configurable Internet Filtering: Ensure the web browsers are used for the intended purpose by limiting users to a “White list” of websites you want them to use.
- 1-Box Onsite can either be connected directly to your web server (if it too is brought onsite e.g. via a laptop), or it can access your server over the Internet.
- Custom branding: Home page and screen saver attracts users and promotes your organization. Organization's colors, and logo can appear in the browser

Registration sponsorship is one of the most visible sponsorship opportunities at the event. All attendees (whether pre-registered or not) must pass through registration.
Product brochures can be placed at the base of each monitor, offering users an easy way to gain a more in-depth understanding of your products and services. Company staff can be on hand to help
users, chat with those waiting in line, answer questions, and walk users through online demos. Branding of the registration form, screensaver, signage, printed badges add the finishing touches
to an impressive company presence.
Userful's design department can help develop a registration page that communicates your message, accentuates your brand and provides sign up opportunities for prospects. Custom-designed signage can
further strengthen your presence at registration.

The system can run up to 10 stations/screens at once. However you need not connect all
screens for all situations. Simply connect the number of screens you need and leave the
others in the box. 1-Box Onsite's software automatically handles however many screens you
have connected so you do not have to adjust anything, simply plug in the ones you need.
1-Box Onsite comes with a laminated graphical “Quick Setup Sheet” to guide
you through the quick and easy setup process. Setup typically takes 10-20 minutes.
3 The Administration Interface

Start the administration Interface (see the screen shot below) by pressing
"Ctrl+Alt+A" on the keyboard of any station. Enter the administrator's
password when prompted (it is printed in your administrators guide). From here you can add,
edit or delete a service. Alternatively you can launch the selected service to all browsers,
or view the service administration page. Note: The Admin Interface cannot be run
simultaneously on more than one station
3.1 Launching a service
The Administration Interface allows you to "push" the address (URL) of a Website (or Java or Thin-Client application) along with browser preferences to all stations with a single click.
Preferences and addresses (URLs) can be pre-stored under a "service name", thereby making it easy for non-technical individuals to use. Simply highlight the service wanted from the
pre-loaded list and then by click Launch Service. This feature is particularly useful for situations such as training where you want to showcase multiple URLs in succession.
Clicking "New" or Edit allows you to add (or edit) a service by pre-storing URLs and browser preferences. Once stored, the service is available on the Administration Interface and can be
pushed out to all stations at an appropriate time.
Fill in the following features on the “Edit a Service” web page (shown in the screen shot):
- Service name - Choose a descriptive name specific to the event or task in question. If there are multiple similar events, we suggest you include a date and/or city (i.e. Chicago
Registration, July 14th).
- Service URL - Either type or copy (Ctrl-c) and paste (Ctrl-v) the URL from the browser toolbar.
- Admin URL - Some web services contain a page providing summary information relevant to the service at hand. For onsite registration this page might information such as number of completed
registrations. 1-Box Onsite offers the ability to optionally pre-store this second URL for convenient "one click" access from the administration Interface.
1-Box Onsite's unique “save snapshot” feature lets you showcase websites without the expense of onsite Internet connectivity (potentially saving thousands of dollars per event). The
"Save Snapshot" button allows you to store entire websites to hard-drive ready for off-line browsing.
After entering the URL simply click the "Save Snapshot" button. This brings up a dialog prompting
for the levels of depth you wish to copy and the maximum file size. This feature saves all linked web pages and other files (including images, PDF files, Macromedia flash files, etc.). Depending
on the number of levels, the size of your site, and the speed of your connection, saving a snapshot can take 20 minutes or more as it needs to download and store all the pages and images.
Saving appends the date the site was copied to the service name showing how up to date the copy is. For example "Userful.com (copied 10/24/03)"
These locally saved "snapshots" can be deleted by deleting the service containing them using the Administration Interface.
The next section of the interface for adding a web-service (see earlier screenshot) deals with browser preferences. Browser preferences are pre-stored with each web-service, ensuring the
browser's user interface is consistent with event's requirements. The default browser configuration is "full-screen kiosk mode". This mode maximizes screen usage and protects user privacy by
preventing users from accessing the browser history. Since Full Screen Kiosk Mode does not include navigation buttons, keystrokes, or mouse clicks users can only navigate by clicking on links within
your page. If "forward" and "back" navigation is desirable, be sure to include appropriate buttons within the web-pages themselves.
The following browser preferences can be set for each pre-stored service:
- Show Window Taskbar -- This enables multiple overlapping browser windows and the familiar graphical "Taskbar" at the bottom of the screen to switch between windows. We recommend
this feature be enabled for training and instruction, and for services that rely on pop-up windows, but disabled for tasks such as registration.
- Show Toolbar -- Here you can enable or disable the toolbar; and specify which individual toolbar elements you want:
- Navigation Buttons (Forward and Back);
- Print button;
- Refresh, Stop, Home buttons;
- Magnification control (allows users to increase the size of print in the browser window);
- Address bar;
- Exit Button (clicking this restarts the browser clearing all cookies and browser history).
- Show Bookmarks toolbar -- This toolbar is recommended when 1-Box Onsite is being used for public web browsing. The toolbar includes
Google, stock-ticker, and news search boxes, links to
popular Web Mail programs, and translation shortcuts.
- Show Status bar -- The status bar occupies a bit of extra screen real-estate but provides users with extra information (such as the presence of a secure connection, a progress indicator
when loading web pages, and the URL when you point to a link).
- Show Print Confirmation Dialogs -- By default, print jobs are sent automatically to the printer, without interrupting or confusing the user with a confirmation dialogue. This feature
makes it easy to auto-print receipts. Enabling this option means users are asked to confirm printing.
- Enable Right-click and Keyboard shortcut navigation -- This feature allows users to revisit pages in the browser history hence should remain disabled (along with the navigation buttons)
for situations where protecting user privacy is important. When enabled this allows users to revisit pages accessed previously from that station and potentially compromise the privacy of previous
users. An alternative approach to privacy protection is to enable the "Exit button", which when clicked restarts the browser, clearing all cookies and browser history.
Filtering limits browsing to preset list of domains and blocks access to any other URLs. Allowable URLs should be separated by spaces. For example entering "Userful.com e-complex.com"
would prevent users from accessing any but these two sites, regardless of whether they typed the address into the address bar, or clicked an external link on a Userful.com web page.
Optionally display a screensaver after a preset period of inactivity.
The Administration Tools Menu is obtained by clicking on Administration panel bottom right on the
Administration Interface. This menu provides the following tools
- Printer Admin - Shows the print queue, allows you to delete pending print jobs, print test pages, and administer the printer. 1-Box Onsite also offers a web-based print queue that can
be accessed from any web browser connected to the "1-Box Onsite".
- Set Date and Time - System time is only displayed to end users for services which "Show Window Taskbar"
- Network Setup - Allows you to change network settings.
- Proxy Server Config - Allows you to enter settings for a proxy server.
- Command Prompt - Used only for resolving issues with Userful support.
- Clear and Restart All Stations - Clears any modifications, Java files, or other items stored by users. This step is only necessary if one or more stations is behaving strangely. This
has the same effect as rebooting the computer. It re-populates all stations from the default template.
- System Info - Allows you to view and print key system information.
- Log a Bug - Use this for feature suggestion or to report an issue with 1-Box Onsite.
Note: Individual Stations can be cleared or restarted by pressing "Ctrl+Alt+Del", or clicking on the exit button (if it has been enabled within the Toolbar). This feature can also
be used to exit the browser.
1-Box Onsite's built-in registration and badge printing system makes it simple to:
- Collect a valuable attendee database at every event;
- Eliminate paper forms and costly data entry;
- Provide great looking badges;
- Streamline registration and reduce staffing costs;
This easy to use system asks basic demographic questions then laser prints the personalized badge. You can try it out at www.userful.com/events/demo
you can try out the corresponding admin interface at www.userful.com/events/demo/admin
Userful can customize and enhance the registration software for your specific needs on a per-event basis. Common customization requests include:
- Custom questionnaire and registration process;
- Sponsor branding;
- Event information and session descriptions;
- Customized badge design and badge printing template;
- Upload pre-registered attendees (Streamline registration an use the self-service kiosks for all attendees. No need to pre-print badges, and provide staff and signage for separate queues).
- Pre-registration can also be hosted by Userful. This hassle-free option minimizes the burden on event organizers, and ensures a uniform interface for attendees. Each event will have its
own URL (e.g., http://userful.com/news/events/) which can be linked to from the event website or loaded within a frame. Userful will close
pre-registration the night prior to the event and transfer the registration database onto your onsite machine. This ensures onsite registration is fast and seamless and is not dependent on a
working onsite Internet connection.
- Works with Other Registration Systems: 1-Box Onsite works seamlessly with internally-developed or third-party registration systems. You can either pre-print and distribute badges for the
pre-registered attendees or have Userful import your pre-registration database into 1-Box Onsite for self-service printing when they arrive.
- Credit Card Payment Processing: Userful can integrate online credit card payment processing for both onsite and pre-registrations. You will need a merchant account from your
bank. A one-time custom development fee will apply for this integration.
- Replacement badges: Badges are often lost or misplaced during multi-day events. An easy print button in the administration interface ensures replacement badges can be printed with a
single click..
- Email or fax your registration form questions and desired badge layout at least 2 weeks prior to your event. Userful will create the necessary customizations and provide "live"
versions (including registration page, CSV data export, and printed badges) for your review and approval.
- Tips on designing your onsite registration and receipt/badge printing system can be found at http://www.userful.com/products/onsite-design-guide
- Badge paper can be pre-printed and cut to size by your local print shop. Print shops typically offer a variety of paper colors and weights and can preprint the badges with color logos and
background designs appropriate to your event. As many laser printers do not reliably handle card stock we recommend using 20lb bond for your badges. If you are using a heavier paper, be sure
to test-print at least 10 sheets of your chosen paper (cut to the correct size) in your laser printer prior to committing to a paper stock.
- Works with ordinary laser printers (must support A6 "postcard size" paper)
- A6 (105 × 148mm | 4 × 6") Paper is folded in half to fit in standard 4 × 3" badge holders. Larger badge sizes are possible. A surcharge may apply to adjust and test badge layouts.
- Power plug-in
- Optional Internet connection (not required with 1-Box Onsite's integrated registration system, or if you are bringing your own server onsite).
- Standing height tables with a non-glossy/reflective surface covering (reflective coverings don't work with the optical mice).
As a stand-alone system 1-Box Onsite can completely meet your needs. The re-branding fee is simply a way of recovering our costs for providing that extra level of service for those
special events where it makes sense. Fees are only incurred for adding a new custom form to the system. The basic registration form, or any customized form purchased through Userful, can be re-used as
many times as you want without incurring extra fees. When you (or your customer) want something special, we're always there for you.
Various fee structures apply to all customizations listed below. Please consult your support contract or your Userful sales representative for pricing and payment details.
The service includes the following.
- Graphic Design
- Editing, merging, and arranging of graphics (logos and basic artwork to be supplied by customer)

- Printed Badge Customizations
- Include event name, dates, session details, basic receipt information on the bottom half of the badge, "exhibits only" and other markings, etc.
- Testing, client approval, and revision
- Upload to Customer Machine for event
Re-branding Process: Registration form questions and desired badge layout should be emailed or faxed at least 2 weeks prior to your event. Userful will create the necessary customizations
and provide "live" versions of registration page, CSV data export, and printed badges from a web-page for your testing and comment.
Extra fees may apply for complex customizations, including:
- Substantial changes to the badge/receipt layout (e.g., changing the paper size, adding perforated drink and meal tickets, etc.)
- Complex or multi-page registration questionnaires (e.g., selecting sessions, complex fee calculations, etc.)
The service includes the following.
- Nightly emails containing the up-to-date CSV registration file (for backup, newsletters to attendees, etc.)
- Hosted on collated server with redundant fiber and diesel power backups
Pre-loading database of pre-registered attendees onto the onsite machine and turning off pre-registration the night before the event
- Your own administrator login and password to manage pre-registration data
- Re-branding must be purchased from Userful for events using this service.
The service includes the following.
- Mapping data fields and creating upload script
- Test and verify data upload (sample data supplied by customer)
- Final upload to 1-Box Onsite the night prior to the event
Userful provides customizations and enhancements beyond those detailed above for our hourly consulting fee. We will gladly provide binding estimates on project work. Custom development fees
typically apply for features such as:
- Credit Card Payment Processing
- Event website design (including session descriptions, session registration, etc.)
Once purchased, your custom enhancements can be reused or re-branded for any of your future events. This work can also form the foundation for future extensions or enhancements. Your
custom-developed software can be installed without fee on future Onsite systems you purchased through Userful.
Userful can integrate online credit card payment processing for both onsite and pre-registrations. You will need a merchant account from your bank and custom development fees apply.
For pre-registration work involved depends on the chosen card-processing gateway. Userful can integrate with whichever 3rd party card processing service you choose. If you have an onsite
Internet connection, you would simply use the hosted pre-registration service for onsite registration.
Offline Onsite registration: A live Internet connection is required for real-time credit card validation or authorization. However you can still collect credit card numbers as part of
your onsite (offline) registration, these fields (along with the other registration questions) are exported to the CSV file. You can then batch process the credit card payments at the end of the day
or the end of the event. It is worth noting that while Userful can check whether a card number "appears to be valid" offline these algorithms are useful for preventing typos, not for
preventing fraud.
The recommended approach is to have a live Internet connection and do real-time authorization. This increases fraud protection and eliminates the need for batch processing at the end of the day.
5.6 Flash animations
In the past we have done flash animations for customers, however flash animations are also something that you can contract to 3rd parties, and we can simply integrate their work. There are
many opportunities to use flash animations within the registration kiosks for marketing messages (and upsell your clients on this service):
If you don't want to use the integrated registration system, you can direct 1-Box onsite to retrieve content from a different server. This server can be accessed through an Internet connection or
can be directly connected to the 1-Box Onsite. We recommend connecting through an appliance router.
We recommend that the admin URL link to a page containing summary information relevant to the service. For example, if the service were onsite registration, the admin URL could include information
such as number of completed registrations.
Below are some useful JavaScript examples that can be help your web service take advantage of some of 1-Box Onsite's special features.
Registration often involves printing. If you are using your own server you will want to design your web service to take maximum advantage of 1-Box Onsite's unique capabilities and features.
Auto-Print Add this JavaScript code to any web page you would like printed. Printing occurs automatically as the browser loads the page. Provided the "Show Print
Confirmation Dialogs" browser preference is unchecked, the conventional dialog box asking users to approve printing has been removed to streamline the process.
<script><!--
function autoPrint() {if (window.print) window.print();}
window.onload = autoPrint;
--></script>
Auto Print and Redirect (after 6 seconds) Sometimes it is a requirement to print multiple copies of a printed receipt. For example, one for the registrant to take with them, and the other
may require for example a signature on a disclaimer. To automatically print multiple copies of a page, add a short time delay between each window. print call.
<script><!--
function autoPrint() {if (window.print) window.print();}
window.onload = autoPrint; setTimeout("window.location = '/thanks.htm'",6000);
--></script>
Thank you Message This page displays a message such as "Registration complete, please proceed to the front counter to complete payment". We recommend automatically redirecting to
the start page of your web service after leaving sufficient time for the user to read and understand this message
<script><!--
function Redirect() { setTimeout("window.location = '/start.htm'",9000); }
window.onload = Redirect;
--></script>
A redirect with a longer timeout (say 5 minutes) can be used to redirect abandoned stations to the start page.
Explanation: setTimeout('your function', delay in milliseconds)
As the only Public Access company to stand 100% behind our product, we're proud of our simple and comprehensive guarantee: in the unlikely event of an outage, regardless of source, we will
restore all software and customizations on your 1-Box Onsite's at no cost to you. There is no fine print. This covers outages from viruses, hackers, crackers, worms, denial-of-service attacks,
Trojans, abusive users, and even careless administrators. The Userful support contract guarantees you will never again need to worry about maintaining or fixing the software on your public access
computers.
Complete hardware/software support and licensing for the first year comes with purchase. This means that Userful takes responsibility for all components purchased from Userful. Typically, these are
the central 1-Box Computer, keyboards and mice. At most, the administrator would have to physically swap in replacement components in the unlikely event of equipment failure, but would normally not
have to do anything to maintain the system.
Note: Support does not include replacement or service on monitors, printers, or scanners. While we can supply monitors and printers as a convenience to customers, customers can also opt to order
these components from other suppliers. If a customer does order monitors or printers through us, we will arrange for warranty replacement and service on behalf of the customer during the manufacturers
warranty period, only. Manufacturer's warranties vary between one and three years depending on make and model. If you choose to supply your own monitors, printers, and scanners, please note the
following on hardware compatibility. 1-Box Onsite monitors must support a minimum resolution of 1024x768 @ 60 Hz. 1-Box Onsite is compatible with most, but not all printers and scanners. Be sure to
verify make and model compatibility with your account rep prior to purchasing a printer or scanner.
- Hardware.
Replacement parts or unit sent out same day. During first year this is done without fee and Userful will arrange for return shipment to our repair facility, have our carriers provide the
appropriate shipping materials and pay shipping. After the first year customer pays freight and cost of repair or replacement. Customer agrees to insure all shipments to Userful or pay for units
damaged in transit or not received.
- Software Updates and Patches.
Userful distributes new features and updates on a continual and regular basis. Once they are released and pass quality assurance these features are installed automatically on your 1-Box Onsite the
next time it is connected to the Internet.
- New Features and Enhancements.
Suggestions for features and enhancements are always appreciated and carefully considered, and are often integrated into our development plans. Customers who face immediate time lines should
consider contracting Userful to undertake the work as custom development.
