"With the online support there is no need to worry about software failures, technical training or system formatting. You just connect a monitor, keyboard and mouse, and you are done. That's especially good for a rural area."

Maximizing a computer budget with Userful MultiSeat allows more people to access a computer education

Mexico

Education in Mexico is regulated by the Secretariat of Public Education (Spanish: Secretaría de Educación Pública). This Ministry has established a successful ICT program for education called HDT ("Digital Skills for Everyone" from its acronym in Spanish), in order to give access to computers to as many students as possible, support their learning experiences, and improve their skills to be part of the knowledge society.

Veracruz is one of the 31 states that, along with the Federal District, comprise the 32 federative entities of Mexico. It is divided in 212 municipalities, and includes over 22,000 educational institutions. Guillermina Colorado Navarro is a computer science graduate who works for the Government of Veracruz, and her job consists in providing those educational institutions with computing equipment and Internet connections.

The Challenge

Through the HDT program, some of the schools started to receive all-in-one BenQ computers. "These computers worked very well, but using the approved federal budget, it was only possible to deliver 10 computers per school due to their high cost. The problem is that at public schools we usually have groups of 50 students, and it is very well known that the students interacting with the computer learn more than the ones watching," said Guillermina Colorado, from the Government of Veracruz.

In the first phase of the project, the Ministry was planning on equipping 450 schools out of the 22,000, but due to the high cost of the computers and some technical difficulties, it was not possible to complete this first phase. The challenge consisted not only in equipping all the schools, but also in providing access to as many students as possible in each school.

The Solution

Educators get a first look of Userful MultiSeat

A representative from Userful Corporation visited Guillermina and her team in Veracruz, to offer a demonstration of Userful's Multiplied Computing. After seeing Userful MultiSeat working perfectly on two computers, they decided to do a bigger pilot on an actual school located in a rural town called Coacoatzintla.

Six computing stations with Internet Connection were fully up and running in the Telesecundaria Número 157 School, in less than 1 hour. "We were all very impressed. With a traditional solution of 1 PC per student we would've taken the whole day to setup the system, but with Userful, setting up was fast and easy. Plus, 6 people were simultaneously navigating through the Internet without any problem using just 1 PC. Simply unbelievable," said Guillermina Colorado.

The Result

One of the schools in the rural area

So far, over 500 students are learning with computers, the teachers are learning to use them, and thanks to a social program called 'Schools Always Open', the school opens its doors to the community during vacation periods to give everyone the opportunity to benefit from the computer labs. Everyone is so happy with the solution, that are starting to do fundraising activities to increase the number of connected stations.

The project has been a complete success in several areas. Students and teachers are happy using the computers, and the Government of Veracruz is very satisfied with the solution's low cost, high performance and ease of management. "With the online support there is no need to worry about software failures, technical training or system formatting. You just connect a monitor, keyboard and mouse, and you are done. That's especially good for a rural area," said Guillermina.

Guillermina and her team realized that working with Userful eliminates ongoing maintenance costs and reduces hardware costs by 60%. After following the pilot very closely, they concluded that with the same budget they would use to setup a digital lab with 10 BenQ computers, they can build 3 digital labs with 25 stations each with Userful. Their goal now is to replicate the Userful solution throughout the Veracruz school system.

Quick Facts

Userful MultiSeat (now Multiplatform) not only saves money, it also helps the environment by reducing electricity use and e-waste. As compared to a traditional PC-per-seat solution, if each school in the district had just 1 PC powering 20 stations, in just 3 years, the Government of Veracruz could make a substantial impact and save:

  • Total Cost of Ownership

Userful MultiSeat's(now Multiplatform) ability to turn one computer into many saves money by greatly reducing hardware, electricity and support costs lowering total cost of ownership

  • Electricity Savings

Saved 409,814,940 KWh of electricity, enough to power 225,078 homes for a year

  • CO₂ Savings

317,606 tons of CO₂ was saved, equal to planting 78,810 acres of trees or taking 54,949 cars off of the road for one year

  • Increased Access to Technology

Userful MultiSeat software creates multiple high performance desktop stations, and other digital displays, from a central computer.
